As the French government highly subsidizes higher education, the cost for students is very low.

Tuition rates in public higher education institutions

Tuition rates in French public higher education institutions that do not have a general fee waiver policy are the following:

 

Tuition rates for academic year 2019/2020 for Canadian students (excluding Quebec)

If you enroll for the first time at a public institution that falls within the competence of the Ministère de l'enseignement supérieur, de la recherche et de l'innovation (MESRI), tuition fees will be:

  • 2,770 euros per year at the Licence level ;
  • 3,770 euros per year at the Master's level ;
  • 380 euros per year at the PhD level.

 

Tuition rates for academic year 2019/2020 for Quebec students

For European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland citizens as well as Canadian citizens residing in Quebec, tuition fees in a public institution that falls within the competence of the MESRI will be:

  • 170 euros per year at the Licence level ;
  • 243 euros per year at the Master's level ;
  • 601 euros per year in a school of engineering that falls within the competence of the MESRI ;
  • 380 euros per year at the PhD level.

Which public institutions fall within the competence of the MESRI?

  • All of France’s universities
  • All 25 institutional groupings
  • The three INPs (national polytechnical institutes) in Toulouse, Grenoble, and Bordeaux
  • The four écoles centrales in Lille, Lyon, Marseille, and Nantes
  • The six INSAs (national institutes of applied sciences) in Lyon, Rennes, Toulouse, Rouen, Strasbourg, and CentreVal de Loire
  • The three technological universities in Compiègne, BelfortMontbéliard, and Troyes
  • The four ENSs (écoles normales supérieures) in Paris, Cachan, Lyon, and Rennes
  • Twenty national institutions, including the Collège de France, CNAM (Conservatoire national des arts et métiers), INALCO (Institut national de langues et de civilisations orientales), and EHESS (École des hautes études en sciences sociales)
  • Five French institutions abroad: the French schools in Athens, Rome, and the Far East; the Institut français d'archéologie orientale in Cairo; and the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid
  • Twentyfive public research bodies, including CNRS, CNES, CIRAD, INSERM, INRA, and IFREMER

Good to know: many French universities apply a fee exemption policy for international students so you may pay registration fees identical to those paid by French and EU students based on their status, depending on the higher education institution you attend. For more information about this exoneration, please contact directly your French university.

Tuition fees in private institutions

Tuition in private institutions is higher than in public institutions, ranging from €3,000 to €10,000 per year. Check the website of the institution to learn the amount of tuition charged for programs of interest to you.

The Contribution Vie étudiante et de Campus (CVEC)

The CVEC has to be paid by French and foreign students admitted into a public or private French institution to attend a degree program (not an exchange program).

 

The CVEC can be paid online:

  1. Register on messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr
  2. Log on to cvec.etudiant.gouv.fr
  3. Pay the 90 euros with your credit card
  4. Download the proof of payment, which you will need to show in order to enroll at university
