Holders of the extended-stay visa with residency permit (VLS-TS) no longer have to report to the local prefecture to obtain a residency permit. However, they must still have their VLS-TS visa validated.

The validation process

Holders of a VLS-TS visa must comply with the requirements of the OFII, the French office of immigration and integration.

Upon arrival in France they must send to the OFII by registered mail (return receipt requested):

  • the form requesting OFII certification that they received from the consular official who granted their visa
  • copies of the pages of their passport containing identity information and the stamp attesting to their legal entry into France (or the Schengen area).

By return mail, the OFII will ask the visa holder to report for a medical examination and possibly a follow-up visit.

Special cases

1 - Students enrolled at an institution in Paris must bring their documents to the welcome center (Cellule d'Accueil) at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris (CIUP), 17 boulevard Jourdan, 75014 Paris.

2 - Some institutions (including many universities) have entered into an agreement with the OFII whereby their students may submit their documents to the insitution's international student office. Students are strongly advised to check with their institution on this point before arriving in France.

In all cases, a tax of €55 is collected.
